Tribute to Piero Angela: My Childhood Hero

Piero Angela, a name that evokes cherished memories and endless gratitude. If I am who I am today, it is largely thanks to his programs and his ability to transform science into a fascinating and never banal journey. Through him, I discovered a passion for astronomy, which later led me to the world of computing.

It was back in 1984 when "Il mondo di Quark" became a fixture of my afternoons at around 2:00 PM. It was love at first sight. Piero Angela, with his unique way of narrating nature, technology, and scientific discoveries, conveyed to me that sense of wonder born from the desire to explore the universe and understand what lies beyond the stars. Those nature documentaries and news about astronomical discoveries ignited an uncontainable enthusiasm in me, planting the seeds of a passion destined to grow.

This passion for astronomy led me to ask for a work as a gift that had fascinated me from the first glance: the encyclopedia Atlante enciclopedico dello spazio by Peruzzo Editore. Browsing through those pages, rich with detailed images and captivating explanations, was like having a window open to the universe. I remember the hours spent studying planets, galaxies, and cosmic phenomena, trying to understand what Piero Angela had narrated in his documentaries. For me, that encyclopedia represented an extension of the wonder I had discovered thanks to him.

Then came "Quark in pillole" in 1988, a series of short educational clips covering topics such as civic education, health prevention, and environmental protection. Broadcast at various times throughout the day, they brought a breath of fresh air to the television landscape of the time. Thanks to this series, even complex concepts like relativity theory and time travel became accessible to a six-year-old, without ever descending into superficiality.

One anecdote, among many, still makes me smile today. I remember one of the animations in "Quark in pillole," where Piero Angela explained relativity theory and its implications for time travel. I was so fascinated by that episode that I decided to dig deeper, rummaging through the home library until I found a book on the same subject. I was only eight years old, and of course, the reading proved impossible: the language was academic and incomprehensible to me. So, I went to my father to ask if what I had seen in the animation matched what was written in the book. Smiling, he replied, "Essentially, yes."

This episode perfectly encapsulates Piero Angela's genius: his programs not only educated but ignited an insatiable curiosity, stimulating the intellectual appetite of anyone who followed him. Thanks to him, I learned that knowledge is an endless journey, and every answer generates new questions.

Piero Angela was not just a science communicator; he was a life teacher, capable of inspiring generations with his rigorous and passionate approach. Even today, when I look at the stars or immerse myself in a new technological discovery, I think of him and his extraordinary ability to make knowledge a precious gift for all.

His legacy continues with Alberto Angela, his son, who has found an innovative formula for communication. Alberto tells stories of history and science directly on-site, immersing himself in the locations and physically touching the reality he describes. This approach, which combines scientific rigor with direct experience, makes each story even more engaging and immediate. Although not entirely original, as other documentarians like Sir David Attenborough had already adopted a similar method for nature documentaries, taking viewers "into the field" to observe the natural world, what sets Alberto Angela apart is his ability to apply this narrative style to a wide range of topics, from ancient history to archaeological discoveries. His storytelling is not only emotional but also rigorous, focusing on direct engagement, showing not just places but also objects and tangible details that make the narrative more accessible and real. I find Alberto Angela a worthy successor to his father: his programs are true adventures, as if he were taking us by the hand and, with his candor, leading us directly to the site, making us feel part of the journey.

Thank you, Piero Angela, for making the world a better place and for teaching us never to stop marveling.
