Professor Villoresi explains: “Our concept involves a sail-shaped probe propelled by an ultra-powerful laser beam from Earth. The probe can achieve 20% of the speed of light, enabling it to traverse the immense distance to Proxima Centauri B in just 20 years. Once it arrives, the sail, equipped with advanced transmitters, converts observations into light pulses. These pulses form a highly focused conical beam directed back to Earth. Through advanced error correction codes, the beam can relay recorded data to a precise terrestrial receiving station within weeks, effectively creating an interstellar ‘telephone’.”

The Starshot Project: A Global Collaboration

This ambitious endeavor is part of the Starshot project, an initiative under the Breakthrough Initiatives, which aims to advance humanity’s exploration of extraterrestrial life and interstellar travel. The success of the communication system hinges on a multidisciplinary approach, blending expertise in space quantum communication, nano-optics, and telecommunications. Collaboration with prestigious institutions such as Caltech, MIT, and the University of Berkeley underscores the global effort driving this breakthrough.
