An Exceptional Discovery: The Archaeological Operation at Hôpital Porte Madeleine
In the heart of Orléans, within the walls of the former Hôpital Porte Madeleine, one of the most fascinating archaeological campaigns of recent years has taken place. Between 2022 and early 2025, the city’s Archaeological Service uncovered an extraordinary Gallo-Roman necropolis, revealing secrets buried for almost two millennia.
The Necropolis: A Unique Layout
This necropolis, dating from the late 1st to the early 3rd century AD, stands out for its unusual organization. The burials were arranged in a single row along a narrow strip bordered by a pathway on one side and a wall on the other. This layout contrasts sharply with the more extensive and less orderly necropolises of the era.
The tombs primarily contain adult males interred in wooden coffins. The predominance of inhumations over cremations is another unusual feature, suggesting specific burial practices or beliefs within the local community.

Tabellae Defixionum: Mysterious Curse Tablets
Among the most intriguing finds are 21 tabellae defixionum, small lead sheets inscribed with texts in Latin and the Gallic language. These curse tablets were dedicated to chthonic deities and contained magical formulas or curses, often rolled up and placed in the tombs.
The presence of inscriptions in the Gallic language is extremely rare and offers a unique opportunity to deepen our understanding of religious practices and beliefs in ancient Gaul.
The Next Phase: Study and Promotion
With the excavations scheduled to conclude in early 2025, a new phase dedicated to the detailed study of the finds is now beginning. Archaeologists will prepare comprehensive reports and work on showcasing these discoveries to both the scientific community and the public.
